Advice to Travelers: an old children’s rhyme

by Shawn Allen

Don’t start your trip at twilight
and don’t step off the road.
Keep the river to your right
wherever you may go.
Avoid the forest pathways,
the wood is not your friend.
Attend to how the land lays
until your journey’s end.
Listen close to what I say,
on this advice depend
or you shall surely go astray
and your wand’ring never end.
So, don’t leave home at twilight;
stay always on the road,
the river ever on your right
wherever you may go.
