Turning of the World
by Shawn Allen
Were I to set a river-stone in every place you have been
the water would rush unburdened from the mountain to the sea.
If I could burn a candle in every window where I see your face
this world would be an inferno and it would not bring you home.
If I could get a mirror for every memory
there would only be reflections
where something real had been.
Were I to put a metronome in every place I hear your voice
their motion would counteract the turning of the world.
Oh, tell this world to stop turning.
